Jaap van Lakerveld

Jaap van Lakerveld is director of PLATO, an independant research centre of the University of Leiden. He is a specialised in designing, planning and managing evaluation studies. He was involved in a variety of national and international projects in education and learning. In two European networks on self evaluation by schools www.I-probenet.net and http://www.sealll.eu/ with partners from sixteen European countries, he was the author of background materials including a philosophy of evaluation, planning evaluations and implementing and managing evaluations. Within Several European educational projects under Comenius, Lingua and Tempus he served as an external or internal evaluator. As such he operated in the UK, Germany, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, Portugal, France, Denmark, Sweden, Italy, Greece, Spain (Catalunya), Austria. Beside his evaluation studies he specialised in adult learning in organisations. He led a five-year study on learning in organisations of health and social welfare in more than a hundred institutions in the Netherlands. He is an active member of the standing research development centre RDC on in-service training of teachers, which is part of the Association of Teacher Education in Europe (ATEE).  During his career he led several European projects. These project were devoted to (among others): Prevention of truancy and absenteeism among students/pupils, training the trainers for school based teacher education, preparing schools for internationalisation.

As a partner he participated in projects on in service education,  mentoring in teacher education, adult life long learning and vocational education.

He presented numerous lectures on trends in education in particular in teacher education in Europe. He so did in EU conferences, conferences in the USA and in Russia as well as during other conferences of various kinds within Europe.

At present he is involved in three related European studies on competences of educators in adult learning and vocational education.
