Data security

Dear colleges!Today I posted on the platform the following suggestion. I send it to you also by e-mail, because I think it is an important topic….Do you think it is necessary to have a declaration of data security for people who want to be a member of this platform? In the project I worked before we had such a declaration and it worked like this: By the first login in, a pop-up window was opened (by the system) and then you had to “sign” (click yes or no) the declaration of data security, clicking “no” – you couldn´t take part. We also put the declaration (as well as the “nettikette”) on the home-page that everybody can download and read it all the time. The content of this data security was made by an attorney at law. The more people that take part, the more insecure will be personal data … I also plead for something what is called in German “netikette” (netiquet?), a guideline of those contents we don´t want that they are posted, like sexist or racist posts …. (and what we in addition don´t want) ….. Do you think it is necessary for this platform?

  1. Hi Silvia,
    Thanks for your post! :-)
This is actually a hot topic and I look forward to reading other participants’ opinions.
I had never thought about it in this terms.
I always assume that people who join networks as these (educated people with a specific purpose) do so because they are interested in taking part in a communal learning environment, and will therefore adopt an attitude which will benefit their identity as participants and contribute to a agreeable learning atmosphere! …that has been my experience, but I may be wrong. However, I like to trust people until they prove me wrong.

As far as Netiquette goes- That’s a good reminder! Thank you so much. :-)
    I like this resource a lot: http://www.albion.com/netiquette/ .
I also found the quiz very interesting and Important http://www.albion.com/netiquette/netiquiz.html
    It’s a good, quick exercise.
Thanks for reminding us about this! ;-)

    Hi Cristina,

Of course, you are right normally you assume that people who take part in a platform are serious and interessted in the topic and don´t want kidding. I don´t think that the members, you and our colleges act insecure with data. But there are also “web-pirates” or “funny people” who are not interessted in the community, they like to register everywhere and post all around the web beside the originally content. Maybe I am to fearful, maybe the other participants don´t think we need this private policy.

Giving the platform a “netiquet” I think would be a good idea, the community gives itself a “framework” for the content.

I am also looking forward what the other participants think about this suggestion. :-)

    Hi again Cristina,

I now read the netiquet (by the link you posted). I think that would be a good draft for us! And … the quiz is really very nice!

    Silvia

  4. It’s a good one, isn’t it!
I will prepare a post about it, so it becomes more visible within the network.
thank you for bringing this up. It’s something really important. ;-)

Ich wünsche Ihnen ein gutes Wochenende! :-)

Whilst this subject is important it might be better to have entitled is “personal data security”. Data security is a wider topic and could relate to the security of the whole site and/or more importantly to the security of data relating to learners/students on wider projects or programmes. This is a pertinent subject especially because of one or two well publicised instances in the UK and under review by more than one quango in the UK at present. I should have more info about this in a few weeks time
